Capital City Gastropub Part Two

Left to fend for myself for dinner, I decided to go to Capital City Gastropub again. I rode The Watson up the street. (By the way, the only thing to lock your bike to is a One Way sign on the corner. They could really use a bike rack.) I ordered the malbec and the pizza of the day. It was a moon shaped hearth bread called the Mezzaluna, and it was wonderful. Mussels and chorizo, braised field greens and goat cheese. These are some of my favorite things. They all combined to make something that was a bit spicy and a bit creamy. Paired with the malbec, I could not have imagined a better meal.

Capital City Gastropub

In short: this is my new favorite restaurant.

It was Wednesday night and we’d both had difficult days. I was glad we had planned a night out. We were going to try the new restaurant down the street, the Capital City Gastropub.

It’s within walking distance of our apartment, which we like. It was a nice night for walking. A bit chilly, perfect for a jacket and a little snuggling. It was just after 7pm on a Wednesday and they sat us immediately.

Their menu is wonderful. Wonderful. Categories like “street food,” “french classics,” and “vegetarian.” They have a whole page of nice looking wines, including some from the Finger Lakes, and another page of beers, including some local varieties.

They were out of the malbec, but our server recommended the montepulciano. Italian and very nice. Kind of darkly fruity without being too full-bodied.

They were also out of the Vermont strip steak. I blinked only once because my second choice sounded equally delicious: braised bison short ribs. Which were amazing. Very tender.

It was what many people would call pricey. The two of us ate (and drank) for $60. But I like that sort of thing. Every once in a while I deserve to take a pretty lady out to a nice dinner. What is the point of busting your ass at work if you can’t go out every now and then and enjoy something above the norm. It was quality, not quantity, and yet relaxed, and frankly I need a lot more of that in my life. I’m looking forward to going back.
